Easify User Guide...

Installing the Easify Database Server (Advanced)

The Easify installer gives advanced users the option to install the Easify database server to the SQL server of their choice. The database server can reside on the computer on which you are running the installer, or at a remote location on your network. The Easify installation wizard is able to push an Easify database install to a remote SQL server if desired.

We strongly recommend that you run Windows Update and install all critical updates and service packs before installing Easify.

We strongly recommend that you temporarily disable anti-virus software during the installation process, and that you reboot your computer prior to installing Easify.

This option is only recommended for advanced users or IT specialists, as the consequences of installing the database to the wrong location could lead to data loss. This is only an option to consider if you know what you are doing.

Disclaimers now behind us, let's look at how we carry out an Easify database server install.

Launch the Easify setup wizard by running Setup.exe.

Click Next to skip the welcome screen, and at the EULA screen tick the box to accept the license agreement and click Next.

When prompted to choose your installation type, select Database Server Only (Advanced).

Click Next to continue.

Now select the option Database Installation to Existing SQL Server (Advanced).

Click Next to continue.

The next part of the wizard prompts you to enter your Easify database server details.

Here you will need to enter the server name of your data server (which must be running MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition or higher), along with your data servers SQL username and password.

Note: Easify only supports SQL authentication, so your SQL instance must have been installed in mixed mode i.e. Windows authentication and SQL authentication.

You will note there is a tickbox named 'Use this server for Easify clients on this computer.' When checked, the installation wizard will store the server details you enter here, and will use them for any Easify clients that you subsequently install on this computer. This saves you having to re-enter the settings if you decide to install the client later.

When you click next, the installation wizard will attempt to contact the server specified. If the connection fails you will be notified and will need to correct the connection problem before you can proceed with the installation. After all, you can't install a database to a server you can't connect to.

Note: If you experience connection issues, ensure that the relevant ports are open on the computer being used to run the installation and on the destination server. Also check that the destination SQL 2005 server is set to allow incoming TCP connections, and that it is listening on the correct SQL port.

If the connection test succeeds, you will be given the warning above which reminds you that you are about to install a database to an SQL server, and that if that server already contains a database at the location that you specified, it will be overwritten by the installation process and all data will be lost.

You are warned about this by the wizard, and if in any doubt as to whether you will overwrite your data you should click the Cancel button to abort the installation.

If you are sure that you will not be overwriting an existing Easify database, or that you do in fact want to overwrite a database at the destination then click the Ok button to start the installation process.

When the installation is complete you will be presented with the screen shown above.

When you are ready click Finished to close the Easify installation wizard.
